Troublesome Women!
Sign up to the newsletter on the home page for the next TROUBLESOME WOMEN WALK in 2024 - and more! - including WAPPING, BERMONDSEY, CITY GARDENS, MEDIEVAL LONDON.
In the 1880s Wren's Temple Bar - one of the City's most famous gates - was lying dismantled in a Farringdon salvage yard... where it was spotted and rescued by Lady Valerie Meux, a flamboyant former barmaid and banjo-player who was painted by Whistler. Along the way we will hear about the many City women who defied the odds to leave their mark on City history, who might include:
- Medieval alewives & Georgian silversmiths
- Boudicca's blood-soaked rape revenge
- The Queen who invaded England & threw her own husband off the throne
- The female stockbrokers who stormed the Exchange - 50 years after women got the vote!
- Cross-dressing master criminal Moll Cutpurse
As ever we will end the walk in a historic pub for those who fancy a post-walk drink/food and natter.
This walk will last approx 100 mins. Start St Paul's Tube, ends Temple Bar, Paternoster Square, EC4M 7DX
