Outcast! Tales of old Spitalfields
Saturday 2nd November from Liverpool Street station.
1115 for an 1130 start.
An autumn day is the perfect time for a stroll around beautiful photogenic Spitalfields - famous for its Huguenot silk weavers' houses - the largest preserved area of Georgian dwellings in London. We'll be peeling back the layers of history here to discover the many different peoples who have made the area their home: as well as Huguenots, there have been Ashkenazi Jews, Irish, and Bengalis - escaping famine, war, religious persecution or genocide - each of whom have left their distinctive mark here. We’ll see the most photogenic of the Huguenot terraces, a famous Hawksmoor church, wonderfully preserved shopfronts, delve below ground to glimpse a medieval charnel house, hear about a pub with a murderous secret, and a shape-shifting place of worship that has been an Anglican Church, Methodist mission, synagogue, and now a mosque!
As usual we will end up in quirky local pub for those who'd like to carry on chatting. (Email me asap if you'd like to join for lunch)
Full meet-up details etc will be sent Thursday before the Saturday :)
