OLD BERMONDSEY RIVERSIDE
SATURDAY 6TH APRIL
An atmospheric 'lost' river, Dickensian slums, and the female jam factory workers who sparked an uprising...
11am to depart at 1115am outside St Olaf House, Tooley Street, SE1 2PR (take Tooley Street exit from London Bridge Station)
This walk back into London's maritime and industrial past will follow in the footsteps of Pepys, Dickens and JMW Turner, taking in historic docks, great river views to the Shard and Tower Bridge, and Victorian-era factory buildings where the great British biscuit was invented! There's also fascinating social and political history - a famous uprising by female jam-factory workers and championed by London's first female mayor.
We will visit:
- Jacob's Island - once home to the worst 'rookery' slum in London - the setting for a dramatic scene in Oliver Twist
- St Saviour's Dock - the atmospheric site of one of London's lost rivers the Neckinger
- A Victorian factory to hear the tale of the 1911 Bermondsey Uprising
- the charming riverside statues of the Salters - local social reformers - their daughter and cat!
- Butler's Wharf - with the finest view of engineering marvel Tower Bridge
- the ruined remnants of Edward lll's C14th Manor House
We wil end up in The Angel Pub made famous by Whistler
