The City boasts dozens of green havens and little known spaces, many that boast fascinating stories rooted in the City's 2000-year history. In the Secret Gardens walk we will explore the horticulture and the history of gardens large and small that have bloomed in ruined churches, graveyards and atop a City skyscraper, and venture south to Southwark to unearth more garden histories.
Among the gardens we will visit:
- the tranquil gardens of the church where Keats was baptised
- the stunning contemporary roof garden atop a City skyscraper
- often called the City's best kept secret, the atmospheric garden in a ruined Gothic church designed by Wren
- the hidden herb 'knot' garden on the foundations of a medieval Friary - with Shakespearian connections
- a haunting graveyard that was the last resting place of Southwark's 'geese' - women working in the sex trade
As ever, we will end up in a pub for lunch/drink for those who wish to carry on chatting! (Not included in price :) )
All London History Walks are 90-100 minutes, take place on a Saturday or Sunday morning, and start and finish in or near the City of London, near a tube station. Please sign up to the newsletter for news of upcoming walks and to enjoy the reduced members' price.
