Explore the hidden histories and secret gems of the City of London with a qualified guide
The City of London. It's where the capital's history began - two thousand years ago. Join a 90-minute walking tour with London History Walks and you will hear some of the fascinating, eye-opening, and often grisly stories from the ancient heart of the city. We will visit sites both secret and famous - from the bloodstained first-century Roman amphitheatre, through the alleys of the plague-riddled Medieval era into the Age of Enlightenment, and right up to the bombed churches of World War Two. We'll delve into stories as diverse as the Georgian bodysnatchers, The Great Fire, the literary giants like Shakespeare and Dickens who made the City their canvas, dip into the colourful traditions of ancient livery companies, and enjoy the magnificent architecture of Sir Christopher Wren, whose work left such an imprint on the City.
Hello. I'm Alison Turner, your friendly guide on a journey into the City's secret, intruguing - and sometimes shocking - past. The aim of London History Walks is to tell the tales from the City's past that both illuminate and entertain, to share my love of the City's extraordinary history, and to leave you with a smile on your face.
My lifelong passion for the past started young, when my dad would drag me up ruined Norman towers and down into World War Two bunkers... I must've inherited his enthusiasm because today I'm a qualified City of London guide, with an Institute of Tourist Guiding green badge, and I've also spent too many years to count making TV documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4 and international broadcasters, specialising in guess what?.. history. I also write crime novels; my latest series is set in a Camden mortuary (I confess to having a taste for the dark side...) I love my walk guests asking questions and am always happy to suggest further reading and research resources. I look forward to meeting you soon on one of my guided walks!
